Transport Design: The Vehicle, or Mobility Itself?

Transportation design shapes the vehicles and systems that move us—trains, cars, buses, bicycles—as well as the services, journeys, and infrastructures that make travel seamless and delightful.

For a long time, the discipline focused strictly on the vehicle—its exterior lines, its cabin, its comfort. However, the true need is not the vehicle itself, but getting from point A to point B in the best possible conditions. As captured by the concept of "mobility as a service," what users truly seek is not to own a car, but to solve a journey, door-to-door, with as little friction as possible.

This shift is pivotal, and its impact is profound. Designing a better vehicle—the object—does not necessarily improve mobility—the system. A flawless car stuck in a congested city moves nothing. Conversely, designing for mobility means designing for intermodality, connections, passenger information, accessibility, and the first and last mile—where the journey is won or lost. The weak link in any journey is rarely the vehicle itself; it is the seamless transition between modes of transport.

The challenge is also systemic and environmental: mobility directly impacts our cities, the climate, and accessibility inequalities. Optimizing the comfort of a single transport mode without considering the entire ecosystem can worsen congestion or further exclude those who lack access.

Our approach elegantly bridges the object and the system, blending the traveler's experience with the operational mechanics that power it. Designing transport means crafting a beautifully lived end-to-end journey, not just a beautiful rolling object.
