
The design sprint is a short, intensive format—often five days—that condenses the key stages of design: understanding, sketching, deciding, prototyping, and testing, to move from a burning question to proven learning in just one week.
The format was popularized by Jake Knapp at Google Ventures (Sprint, 2016). Its promise is incredibly compelling: instead of debating for months, we bring the right people together, prototype a realistic solution, and test it with real users by Friday. We save months of development on ideas that wouldn't hold up in the wild.
However, that speed comes with a cost we must acknowledge. Five days are plenty to test a solution hypothesis; they are not enough to deeply define the problem. A brilliant sprint can quickly and beautifully answer the wrong question if the upfront framing was rushed. This compressed timeline favors "neatly packageable" topics and can overlook long-term complexity, deep field research, and stakeholders who cannot be summoned in a single week. The sprint accelerates convergence; it does not replace the crucial work of discovery.
Hence, the risk of treating it as a silver bullet—a sprint for everything, all the time. The sprint is an outstanding tool when the problem is already well-defined and you need to make fast, decisive choices among options. It becomes risky when used to bypass the deeper, deliberate work of truly understanding the user perspective.
Our approach: think of the sprint as a high-powered accelerator after the framing, not in place of it. We use it to decide and learn rapidly, while preserving the necessary time where it matters most: on the ground, tackling the real problem. Fast, but beautifully aligned.
